#WeddingWednesday: Fall Outdoor Wedding Tips and Ideas!

Fall is just around the corner and that means bonfires, apple cider, pumpkins and yes...pie! Fall colors are gorgeous and make it a great season for an outdoor wedding. Here are some fun creative ways to incorporate some of your favorite fall festivities into your big day! I don't know about you but when I think Fall I think pumpkins and hayrides. Orange might not be your fist choice for decor so consider painting or even decorating pumpkins to add that fall feel to the scene. Switch things up a bit by getting rid of traditional ceremony seating and going instead with hay barrels. As beautiful as an outdoor wedding might be we all get a little chilly after a while. Help guest combat the cold by offering blankets to keep them warm. If you really want to heat things up bonfires are the way to go. They will get your guests warm in no time and can actually be quite romantic. And if you do choose to have a bonfire then its only right that you have s'mores! Pre-made kits make the cutest favors! If your venue doesn't allow open pits of fire or if you just don't have the extra space you can still have a s'mores bar. Just use small burners to roast the marshmallows. Its a great substitute for a sweets bar. Speaking of sweets; instead of going with the usual cake for dessert try offering up some fall flavored pumpkin and apple pie. painted pumpkin Hay seating

#WeddingWednesday: McDonalds Wedding in Hong Kong

McDonalds Wedding

mcdw

Are you planning a wedding but money is tight, have a love for burgers and French fries so great that you can't imagine having a reception without them? Well a popular fast food chain has the perfect package for you! CNBC revealed this week that McDonald’s wedding parties are so popular in Hong Kong that the fast food empire has a dedicated wedding service there, available in 15 venues.

Customers can choose from four different wedding packages, ranging from around HK$2,888 (£218) to HK$9,999 (£753). The most expensive offering include a pair of “McDonald's balloon wedding rings", “character gifts” for up to 50 guests and a McDonald's apple pie display (well, I suppose it saves choosing a wedding cake). McDonald's spokeswoman Jessica Lee said that the program, which started in 2011, had been launched "because many customers tell us that McDonald's is where they first started dating... McDonald's is where their love stories grew. “This connection is exactly why they want to hold their wedding parties and even anniversary parties at McDonald's—to relive sweet beginnings and bring their romantic story full circle." A spokesman for McDonald's said that it had no plans to roll out the service in other countries, but Hong Kong is not the only place that has witnessed nuptials among the chicken nuggets. Last year, a couple from Bristol made headlines when they held their wedding reception at a McDonald’s they ate in twice a week. It was certainly a brave decision: due to the firm’s alcohol ban, they had to make do with soft drinks instead of fizz.

You would probably raise a few eyebrows among friends and family if you announced you were holding your wedding reception at McDonald’s – but in these straitened times, you would certainly save a few pennies. And at least there would be no worries about running out of napkins.

Real Engagement: Janira and Kwame

JKengagement-WEB033

July is a peak season for weddings and engagements so Im excited to share a new Real Engagement Story from two love birds that flew into my heart a couple of months ago. Being from the area I'm used to working with lots of friends from school, work and just seeing people around the area at events and today's featured couple is no different. I have known and worked with the soon to be groom, Kwame for many years through special events  with his company J&K Productions and mine, TALK OF DC in the past and always admired how calm and collected he was under pressure. So I was elated when he asked to assist  his fiance, Janira and him on planning their 2015 wedding here in the D.C. area.

Working with them has been similar to how I remember Kwame in the past, very easy going, fun and organized. They trully are a great team and have each others back no matter what which is so important in marriage and I couldnt be more happy to see a friend so truly in love. Since the couple is based in Texas, we have utilized lots of email and phone calls to go over much of the wedding details for decor, vendors, venues, etc. So I'm excited to have our first couples meeting in the next few months when they visit the area to meet with possible vendors.

Below is a snippet of the submission that Kwame sent to Amber Studios for an Engagement Photoshoot Contest, that the couple actually won thanks to all their friends and family voting on social media! His sweet words were definitely deserving for the picture contest. Enjoy!

Engagement Story:

Praise The Lord she said “YES!”

"My morning began after a restless night of tossing and turning in anticipation for the day to come. I couldn’t stop thinking about how my best friend, Janira Teague, is truly the love of my life. I was also very concerned about every detail of the proposal I was about to deliver later that day. I just wanted everything to be perfect. So, I went to the restaurant, CoCo Sala to put my plan in action. Coco Sala, is where we had our very first date and a where Janira mentioned she wanted to one day get married. Not in the restaurant of course, but up on their beautiful rooftop overlooking the Nation's Capital.

On that rooftop the restaurant’s manager helped me decorate the space with a single table, candle, 2 glasses of champagne, my sweethearts favorite sweet… a red velvet Georgetown Cupcake and 22 pink roses. The flowers represent her favorite color and the number of months we dated, 22. A few hours later, Janira and I enjoyed a wonderful date night at the Coco Sala Restaurant. She had no clue about the proposal, but after dinner she asked me if I thought the manager would let us check out there rooftop venue. Of course he said yes and I took her up to the stars to begin the rest of our life together.

Just thinking about that day makes me realize how lucky I am to have found my soul mate. God blessed me when he brought Janira into my life and he continues to strengthen our relationship every day. My beautiful fiancé brings out the best in me, helps me to be a better person.

Now I would love to show the world how wonderful her spirit  shines from the inside out and I’m confident that “The Amber Studio” photography will beautifully capture that essence.

Gratefully,

The Happiest Man On Earth

9 Things No One Tells You About Wedding Dress Shopping

wedding The man of your dreams just popped the question, and now it is time find the perfect dress. To ensure that the experience doesn't rival Kandi's on RHOA,

kandi

take a look at the tips Wedding Wire compiled below.

1. Go On A Weekend

Yes, you may think going on a weekday will be less busy, but on weekends, there are often designer trunk shows and discounts. Bonus!

2. Family First

Only bring your very nearest and dearest to your appointment: mom, grandmother, sister, cousin, or even dad. Keep it to a maximum of five people. Otherwise, there won’t be enough seats in the fitting room!

3. Wear Proper Support

Because after all, you will be changing in front of everyone, and wearing very, very little clothing at times. You’ll need a nude strapless bra (that’s not as old as mine from high school, oops!), shapewear to slim and smooth out any unwanted bumps, and shoes (preferably heels around the same height you might wear on your wedding day) so you can get an idea of an appropriate hemline.

4. Be Vocal

Tell your consultant up front what your budget is, pick out sample wedding dresses that you want to try on, and give your honest opinion. It’s okay to hear from family, but once you’ve tried on a dress, you should be the first to speak. Say out loud what you like and don’t like about each gown, and then rank them in order of your favorites. Also, ask to try on accessories, too. It becomes more real wearing a veil and sash.

5. Get Movin’

Don’t just stand on the pedestal! Walk around in each wedding dress—it’s not like you’ll be standing still on your wedding day. Try sitting, walking quickly, even dancing in the bridal salon! I found that some fabrics and silhouettes made me waddle like a duck! No thanks.

6. Eat Beforehand

Trying on wedding dresses is physically and emotionally draining. Since my appointment was a 1 p.m., I decided to eat breakfast but not lunch only because I knew I would go out to eat afterwards to celebrate. My stomach was growling the entire time.

7. Never Underestimate Your Consultant

I must admit that I was a little hesitant about my bridal salon consultant at first. She strangely resembled Edna from The Incredibles, complete with thick black-rimmed glasses. In a way, she was the perfect match though. Her enthusiasm was contagious, (the opposite of my reserved shyness), but not overbearing. She listened to what I wanted: lace, no strapless, fit ‘n’ flare, v-neckline and illusion back, and in the end, it was her pick that had it all. It was the one.

8. No Cameras

Many bridal salons won’t let you take pictures. I was only allowed to take a picture of the wedding dress I planned to purchase, not the ones I tried on. But that’s okay. If I did take a photo, I would have been secretly afraid my fiancé would find it.

9. Shop Sooner Rather Than Later

Even though my wedding is in late-September, my wedding dress doesn’t come in for another 22 weeks—that's approximately 5 months. I thought I was trying on wedding dresses too early. Wrong. Make sure you go at least 7 months or more before your big day. Otherwise, you may not have enough time to get alterations. Rush delivery, please?

How to Craft the Perfect Pitch Deck

sponsor When planning a large scale event, it is imperative to secure sponsors. Whether you are looking to solicit small local businesses or large corporations, it is important to approach them professionally and with a strong presentation. Eventbrite compiled a great list of how to Craft the Perfect Pitch Deck. Check them out below.

1. Format matters. Be respectful of the inboxes you’re hitting, and don’t send a huge Powerpoint presentation. Turn that bad boy into a PDF, please, or better yet — send a link to where the deck lives on your website or a link to a Box.com file or other file-sharing service.

2. Include your logo. Include your website. Include your contact information (email address, social media profiles, etc.).

3. Do your homework first. Be smart about who you are approaching and research what type of organization is likely to be a fit for your event.

4. Be as specific as possible about your conference. What is the point? Where is it happening? What are the dates? Why are people coming? Who are your speakers? Why should you be considered credible?

5. Be as specific as possible about your attendees. How many people are you expecting? Age? Location? Income level? Interests? Really drill down — this information is really interesting and valuable to potential sponsors.

6. If there was an event last year, include photos from last year’s event.

7. If there was an event last year, include quotes from last year’s attendees or sponsors about how great it was.

8. If there was an event last year, include notable numbers. Number of attendees, number of speakers, the person who traveled the furthest to attend, if funds were raised, etc.

9. Include a glossary or a bulleted list of terms/facts that will be helpful to have on hand before reviewing the deck.

10. Offering different levels of sponsorship? Create a different deck for each level and determine which level you’re asking for. Only send that deck when you’re soliciting a company.

11. Offer category or level exclusivity. For example, make it clear that there can only be ONE silver level sponsor, or there can only be ONE breakfast sponsor.

12. Add tickets/hospitality benefits to each sponsorship level. Comped registration to your conference or a special sponsors dinner are great ideas to start with. You’d be shocked to see how many times people ask for money or donation, but offer nothing in return besides your logo on their marketing materials and a mention on social media!

13. Are there benefits to being a sponsor outside of the event itself? Many conferences now are offering many different types of benefits: marketing, hospitality, onsite, year round, etc. Think about the big picture!

14. Be precise. Keep things as short as possible — do you really think everyone has time to read a 20 page pitch deck? Nope!

15. Be humble. End with a THANK YOU! and be sure to include your contact information, how to follow up with you, and when you’ll be reaching back out to discuss.

Eventbrite also hosts amazing webinars and they are FREE! Be sure to subscribe to their blog to stay up to date on all of the great information.

For Richer or For Poorer: 10 Money Questions to ask Your Future Spouse

money

Today I ran across this article on Daily Finance on 10 tough money questions you must ask your future spouse. Since finances are one of the top reasons marriages end in divorce, I thought this would be a great article to share with favored readers. Check out a few of the tips below...

1. What's Your Credit Score?

Your credit score can affect your ability to start a family, buy a house or replace a car. Once you've married, your partner's credit score can be your problem, too, and it's not one you want to find out about after you file a loan application. Hint: It's a bad sign if your intended can't or won't answer this question.

2. What's Your Income?

Most of us consider this to be a closely guarded secret, but you can't hide it from your soon-to-be spouse for long. Nor should you. As you plan a life together, you need to know that both of you have realistic hopes and expectations about the lifestyle you'll enjoy.

3. How Much Do You Have In Savings?

You should know whether the person you're about to marry is living paycheck-to-paycheck. Many young people just starting out haven't banked much, and can't. But together you can work out a plan to establish an emergency fund covering three to six months of expenses.

4. What Debts Do You Have?

A truly embarrassing question, but one that must be asked. Marrying someone makes their debt yours, too. And a substantial debt can wreck the lifestyle you want together. There is a worst-case scenario here: If the person you're planning to marry is skipping out on obligations like a student loan, credit card payments or child support, you might rethink your choice of partner. If your loved one just has poor spending habits, work it out together now.

View the full list here.
